Mark, I water mine while inside, but not as frequently or with same volume. I have had a few occasionally go slightly soft (pliably soft) and a little bit of water does firm them up.

The big factor is whether it is squishy or pliable. You will know. Some retain leaves and still can be dormant or somewhat inactive. If your temps inside are warm then they will not be sitting in moist, cold soil.

I tend to water down the trunk/caudex of the tree (not seedlings) and let the water flow down to the roots this way. Chris told me this many years ago and it makes great sense.

Interesting fact about that watering idea Rick. I have always done the exact opposite!! I Practice 'rim watering', working on the theory that the water will stay away from the caudex and main roots that don't actually absorb it, but will moisten the soil near the edges of the pot and force the feeder roots to elongate and search it out....just my theory.

I'm still completely soaking mine inside. I have clay pots sitting in a large plastic tray. I fill that tray up with water after I've soaked the plants!! Oh, and I use potting soil as media. Still have yet to see one rot.

The caudex was soft due to lack of water. I watered them and they hardened up. I will try watering down the trunk next time. I will keep them a little warmer for the next few days.

Oddly enough it is snowing right now, and this past week we were in the 70's. Crazy times.
