A backless bench would fit under the window nicely and offer extra seating. It would also allow for airflow from the floor vent.

It looks like the chair should not be angled, so turn it slightly, then you can add a table and lamp next to the chair. Then you would not need to put anything under the window, because I am assuming that you will add curtains.

Focus the furniture and rug around the focal point fireplace. You might try a pair of stools under the window with a bench. Stools can be topped with trays to function as coffee tables or they can be pulled closer to the conversational grouping when you have extra guests.

Really think it is key here ...to see the whole room..it could be as simple as moving the rug and re-arranging the furniture..(there are a lot of outlets there ..I would paint them to match the wall in any case)Looks like floating the furniture would help..creating focal points?

i would put the sectional on the long wall opposite the 2 chairs. Then put a dining table where the sectional was. The way you have it now is off bc the rug isnt placed in front of the sectional nor under the coffee table. Id also get drapery panels for the window.

Have you considered painting the brick fireplace? There a bit too much marroon and brown in that room. It needs some ivory to brighten and soften

It's hard to tell from all the photos (which we are glad you posted) but it seems as though you may just have too many pieces of furniture in the room. The trend these days is to "float" furniture in the room which means that it is not against the wall but instead is away from the wall by a foot or more.

Possibly some of the furniture could go in a different room. Try pulling the sectional away from the walls and closer to the fireplace. Position a couple of chairs facing the coffee table, leaving one end of the square formation (of sectional and chairs) open to the fireplace. Perhaps you could humor us by trying this and taking a photo. Ideally, you would have a console (sofa table) behind the part of the sectional that is parallel to the FP.

I would have preferred the TV between the windows, but now I'd move the rug some, centering it with the fireplace on one end and with the two windows that flank the chairs. Then pull the sectional and coffee table onto the rug with at least the front 1/3 of the two wings of the sofa on it. If that makes things too crowded, try just getting the edge of the rug under the front of the sofa. Leave the chairs where they are, and add a round table when angling them. If you want them squared up, use a square or rectangular table. The 1.5 chair by the exterior French door seems a bit too much in the room. Can you use it elsewhere? Take photos again by standing at each wall and shooting toward the opposite wall, working around the room clockwise. We'll work on art, lamps, etc when the new arrangement is in place.

Well, certainly you're right there on the scene and we are not. However, it's hard to tell why you can't move it to face the fireplace.

It can float. Furniture doesn't have to and in fact shouldnt be always against a wall. If theres not enough room then yeah it wont work, but if the room is wide enough you could float it.

Don't have your measurements, so this is just for basic concept with the sectional floating on the carpet. If you have measurements, we can make realistic adjustments to the plan.

You would have a couple nice chairs to use elsewhere if you float the sofa. I'd like to see that low chair, it looks interesting!

I love, love, love your area rug, only until you gave us more photos. I agree the rug should be the first item placed in the room & it should be centered to the FP as well as centered in the room. Then go from there. Take us more photos when rug has been moved, please.

Ok...I've been very consumed with this family room and believe the rug is too small...9x 12 reason coffee table is not on rug which I believe it should be. I'm getting rid of this rug because I think as one commentator said...too much maroon with brick and rug. What do you think of new pattern? It's a rich brown ...look black in photo

I prefer the original. The issue is the furniture placement. Everything is under arrest up against the walls. Seating should all be touching the rug. That is a basic interior design "rule" that is almost universally agreed upon. Would you do us a solid and just try pulling it in. Specifically the sectional but also 2 of the chairs. The 3rd chair is too much and can live in another room.

Just try it and photograph! Then we can figure out the proper rug style. My issue with brown is it's very close to maroon, they are only a blink apart. I'd prefer something that contrasts more, some were in the room.

Is it that wide that it will reach all the way to the entry? As long as there is a decent pathway between the entry way and arm of sofa it's fine for it to sit in front of it.

There should be plenty of room if it's far enough down the wall towards the TV. Couches don't have to face this dead on. Many people place there's perpendicular to TV and you just lay on it long ways or sit at an angle. With sectionals especially this can be easily done,

I'm just saying give it a try! Test out the 2 different scenarios and see. You can move it back if it doesn't fit. It would really do a lot for the room if you can make it work!

Can you turn the sectional 45 degrees? Myself, I'd use just the low chair with it.

I like your current rug much better than what you are looking at...

I can't count how many times we hear "but it can't be done, because..." You owe it to yourself to shove the furniture and rug around until it comes out right! Only trying our suggestions will tell the tale in the end. Do you have some teens available during this down-time who might be "hired" or bribed to push and shove?

I agree with decoenthusiaste who showed you a brilliant layout. If for some reason you can't move the furniture at this time, perhaps you could measure both the furniture and the room so that we would know if it's truly impossible or what.
