I really like your couch. I'd just get it cleaned and it will look brand new. I agree with everyone that is saying to save your money until you get into your new home. I just purchased one and you'll need to tailor your new furniture to the space.

You can easily transform this space with art, colorful rugs a, coffee table and accessories.

If I'm not mistaken, the couch is IKEA Karlstad. The covers should be removable and washable.

I love the first rug you posted! It almost looks like a mix between a modern persian and an overdyed rug! Not a huge fan of any of those pillows but you are definitely on the right track. Of those posted, my favorite is the last one.

As far as art I have an antique collection of Audobon prints I think would look lovely framed above the couch. I have enough I am sure I could pull similar colors. What do you think?

I have been looking around for different consoles- I am kicking myself for not purchasing a MC styled one at goodwill years ago. It was $12. I wou I am not set on a MC style console however I do like that style. Do you think it would go with that style of couch?

Susan, perhaps I jumped the gun and interpreted that comment in a worse way than you meant it. To me, the wording seemed like "If you don't like our advice about the couch then don't ask for help at all." I apologize to you for assuming the worst. I truly appreciate the help and support. I also appreciate you giving me your ideas to try to keep me from making a mistake with such a huge purchase.

I don't know if this changes the holding-off opinions but the townhome is also a rental. My husband is a tattoo artist and the types of areas that are great for business are not my ideal places to buy a home.. If that makes sense. Just more urban than I'd like to buy. We will not be buying a house in the next 10 years or so. So I can't just not buy a couch because it may not work in the next house. No time like the present. ;D

The couch is an ikea couch, and the covers on the cushions do come off (the armrest does not) but the couch is in worse condition than it appears(or maybe it doesn't and you guys are being nice :D) When our cat was a kitten she scratched the edges of it, so the frame is visible at the bottom. Also my husband moved up here first and was at his parents house while he found an apartment and they decided to unpack the couch while he stayed with them and just took horrible care of it. Different ball of yarn. Anyways it is in bad condition. And uncomfortable. Someone tried to wash the covers but also dried and shrank them. So the cushions buckle under and push away from the back. They have to be fixed no less than 29,384,239,048,209,438,093 times a day. Plus I am ready for a nice couch. :D

AnneMarsh I was thinking a large plant too. Either a Ficus/Fiddle Leaf Fig or a Lemon Tree Hybrid. Someone advised against it and I was wondering why not? I didn't know if there was something I was missing or not.

I agree with the other posters - save your money for the new house. While you think you like sectionals, your dream house may not - meaning your haste to spend money now may be wasted. Do it right the first time so you don't spend more money doing it over. Who cares about a boring apartment interior!!! Spend your effort on idea books and looking at houses. Save your money UNTIL you have the house and resist your spend money impulse on furniture you clearly don't NEED but WANT.

bellburgmaggie we are not buying a house anytime in the near future. If we bought a house it would be 10 years or so down the road. We are moving to a townhome rental that is a very similar setup to this one. Instead of the window to the right there is a door. On the other side a wall comes up to close in the living room. But same size, very similar setup. I just have to agree to disagree with the sentiments of not getting a couch until we buy a house. I don't want to wait 10 years or so to buy a comfortable couch.

Even a sectional can be moved so I would not wait to buy one. Can you draw a floor plan of the new town home , not a perfect one obviously but as close as you can? Put in the Windows, the doorways, and where the cable comes in if you can. Might help the worry warts on here!

Ps I like the gray sectional you posted the best. The lounge part can be a problem sometimes.

Here is another option working with your sheers. I would put some sort of console or bookshelf behind the left side of the sectional to act as a room divider/sofa table. The one pictured is from IKEA (so is the beach pic). Would the wicker trunk work to the right of the sofa for your dog and cat?

The space we have now is 10' from the window to the right edge of the bookcase. 13' from window to door frame.

Also the couch I posted can be reconfigured to be reversed. I checked it out in the store.

Terry, The townhouse is the other house that we are moving to in 6 months :D It is a rental as well though. The pictures are of my apartment now.

What about a longer shelf under the TV for now? Something to hold the Xbox but cheap and versatile enough it wouldn't be a huge waste. I'm sure I could find a use for the shelf in the townhome too.

A storage piece for under the tv is a great idea. Are you going shopping or are you using overstock.com or something like that?

And I think you need to decide now if your sectional will have the lounge part. That is important.

Terry, If it was a shelf I would just go to Lowes and get one. If it is an actual Console I will probably look around.

The sofa will definitely have a chaise. Thats our favorite part! :)

I would say get a console, one good enough to bring with you. Must be wider than your tv. And what color do you have in mind for the sectional and chair? Are you going modern or traditional?

Terry Toon, I'm on board with you for the console. The only thing with the console is that I cant find a long enough one easily. And a long enough one may not even fit in niche for the TV.

I definitely want something longer then the TV. For the Sectional I would like a darker color as we have pets and kids. Greys, sage. I don't like the shades of brown or beige. Leather is out- hubby hates it. Idk about a chair :/

I am not sure if I want Modern or Traditional. I like Mid Century, I also like Eclectic looks that are simple color schemes.

Okay sounds like you should wait on the console. Look for something tho to put under the tv. It looks not so hot bare. Well, get your dream sectional, just make sure it fits in the townhouse, then you can get help with rugs, chairs, etc. I'd recommend a round dining table for the dining room, other than that I don't have floor plan programs so I can't help much. Must double check with SO as he's living there also.

I deleted the things you did not like. can add more with that pillow. please note it is less gray and more taupe. What made you like that one the color? the pattern? Do you want everything in the taupe color? the rug has some aqua in it?

Final question - are you saying you are not going with that sectional?

I think it's a waste of money, a pain to put up and take down when you have to fill in the nail holes when you move. Open storage is not my thing, but it could work for you here. Especially since you know the console for your new place will not fit here. So I think I just changed my mind- go for it!

Actually I might install a shelf for the dog and cat and put the chest back under the tv. I'm going to look at your craigslist. I've scored big there.

havingfun Honestly, I like it because it is not as busy I am also not a fan of modern patterns. :D Im a snooze I know. No wonder I am where I am lol! I think the taupe would go better with the putty couch. I like the rug because it almost looks like a persian rug to me. I love persian rugs.

To be clear I am 95% sure we will get that exact sectional- most likely in putty. I like the neutral color that isn't as hard as the charcoal. If we didn't get that sectional we would still get another sectional. I am always wishing our sectional now had the third side.

Terry, I think your right with that, I'm going to put the chest back under the TV for now. But no shelf under the window. My two year old would be on it in a heart beat.

ER612 I was thinking something like the second layout for the new house. The doors are sliding and they open from the right. The TV is 5' 3" across the bottom. The console would need to be at least 6" or more IMO.. I saw the ones on CL you found I didn't remember any of them being long enough.

Terry there is this person here who is snapping up all the nicer antiques and repainting them shabby chic colors. Its driving me nuts! lol I have to beat them to it!

Since you need a TV console and will be moving in 6 mo. why not go ahead the buy the one now that is bigger. It may not fit in the niche, but you can set it in front of it. The niche doesn't look that deep so it would not be perfect but you would have your console now. It will extend from the door to the other opening. Just a thought.

Overstock.com has some great consoles that are not too pricey. What do you need 72"? or bigger?

I (along with most people) had the impression that you are purchasing a new house in 6 months. We were saying that it is such large investment to purchase a couch that it would be better to wait until you get there so that you aren't wasting money on furniture that may not work in a more permanent setting.

Thank-you everyone for all your help and opinions. For now, I will continue this endeavor on my own. I feel I butt heads with too many people for this to be a positive experience for me. I didn't realize that it was crucial to mention we would not be purchasing the new home we were moving too. And to have to put that much information out there to get some ideas for color schemes and matching furniture is just uncomfortable to me. Thank-you again.

HavingFun I love the allmodern.com website that the first rug was from. I will be purchasing a couple of items from there. I found some console ideas, and a few side tables I love. Plus kids furniture! Seriously, that website is the best thing I got out of this whole thread! I also loved those shimer pillows that you posted. I think they were the last ones. I am going to look for something similar to that around town.

Susan, That's a great idea but the niche is only like 8" on one side and is about a 15" on the other side. So anything pushed right up to it will not sit straight. I am going to see if I can find something long enough that I like. If I can, I will put it in our dining room for now (kind of like a sideboard) then it will go under the TV at the new rental home. I love the chairs! They are great!

Hi, I too like sectionals when they work in a room, but having moved many times in my life I had to give up the sectional idea. They just aren't flexible enough to accommodate different room sizes and configurations with windows and doorways or even vents and radiators. How about a sofa with a large, almost the length of the sofa, ottoman?
