Walking onions are not fussy. They should be able to winter in your pots, even outside, just a good watering and then a nice blanket of leaves if you are feeling like it, and then be planted anytime you get around to it next spring. It is quite natural that they sprout in the fall before going dormant over winter. Nothing to worry about. If your ground is not yet frozen, you could plant them now if you wish.

Just neglect normally only encourages their spread. You have to be actively at it to kill them off completely. Literally they have to be dug out, and you don't normally get them all the first time either.

I have a bed of tree onions or walking onions or hanging onions that I did not weed for a whole year.

I dug the large ones & let the small one go for another year.

I had so many bed of onions & garlic that I did not have time to weed the 2nd bed of walking onions.

I had an orchard to keep up with too.

I am not proud of my lack of time to weed the 2nd bed, but I am proud of the onion multiplying with out my help.
