Has the appearance of a noctuid moth caterpillar, they can overwinter. In late spring and summer, the adults are the small to medium brown moths that dart around, flush out of watered plants, flit around lights, or die on inside windowsills.

Grubs have three pair of prominent prolegs and can be dotted or speckled, but usually not patterned like your larva.

It does not appear to be a cranefly larva, those might be expected in lawns. I don't know of any moths that use lawn grass as a host plant, so I suspect they were feeding on other plants bordering the lawn area. No need to treat the lawn for these.

I'm not familiar with your area, but it looks like a cutworm (although most noctuid moths--which they are--kind of do!) and they can allegedly damage a lawn if there are enough of them. I'd check with the state agricultural extension service's website and see if they are considered a problem.

Appears to be an armyworm of some kind, possible pest of lawns but more in golf courses. I would suspect that birds would take care of a population in the home lawn.

It's tough to ID a caterpillar from one image, though. It's absolutely a caterpillar, not any other sort of larva.
