You have done your decor the correct way. Buy the area rug for it's beauty as a foundation to build on. Do not try to match any colors with the rug. That's the advantage of having a very nice quality rug. It is timeless.

It looks like your home leans toward the MCM period and I would try to keep that style going. Choosing Danish Modern furniture will go splendidly. Do not line the furniture against the walls. If you have a good view you can go w/o drapes, otherwise I would go with a filmy sheer hung from clips. Some ideas for your room:

Neutrals for the chairs (see below - rug remains the star). Consider moving your couch to the window and I would go with drapery that was the same color as the walls (which I think is fine). I would move the black sideboard to the middle of the large wall and accessorize differently and add some interesting art. Opposite couch and on the sides of the sideboard, add your two chairs. Recommend a glass coffee table, so your rug is not covered up and I would accessorize with purple or mauve, blue, and cream. If the room below feels too modern with your fireplace, it's easy to change by your table selections. Chair below is on sale $630x2 and table is $499, which still leaves about a $1,000 for drapey, prints, and a lamp and side table.

Sometimes drapery can enhance the view by framing the window (see style below), but with your fireplace ledge this probably wouldn't work. You could go the route of roman blinds, which also help draw the eye to the window. Adding window treatments can also warm up a room.

Some additional pictures after playing around with other furniture we had on hand, unfortunately the space between the windows isn't uniform (notice the larger beam in the sunrise picture), so when we moved the couch to be against the windows it looked funny.

Have you tried the couch facing the fireplace and then you could place a console table behind it with lamps. Add a low bench in front of the window and the black piece of furniture on the opposite wall?

Maureen, we tried that but it just looked like we had a couch in the middle of the room. Either the room isn't wide enough - 12.5 feet and/or the couch is too big - about 7.5 feet. I think we might have to live with it against the wall or get a new couch :(
