layered technique for growing flower bulbs in a layer container

Does anyone know how to create a layered container of bulbs which bloom with flowers continuously from spring to autumn? I recall seeing somewhere a technique where you planted bulbs at different layers in a large container, and the different flowers bloomed at different intervals of time during the year. Would be interested in hearing anyone's experience with this.

It's easy enough to do for a succession Spring bulbs but I've not come across it for an entire year's blooms. For one thing you'd have the dying foliage of the early bloomers in amongst the summer flowers for weeks.
