I have some aji seeds from Peru that I will be planting this year. Aji escabeche (aji amarillo), aji rocoto, and aji limo. The packages say that days to maturity are 120-140!! Any chance this is from time of sowing, and not time from transplant? If they are truly that late, should I be starting them earlier? I was planning to sow them indoors around Feb 1st.
That might be from sowing date for your first, small harvest of 1-2 chiles from your first flowers. Plan for more like 6-8 months from sowing to get anything usable.
I grow rocotos and other super hots and in my climate, I don't get ripe fruit until probably starting in July/Aug and I start my seeds in mid January or so. So that's like 150-180 days. They start in my grown room, then go into a heated greenhouse for late spring and then outside finally.
The rocotos I found to be even more frustrating.... they like cooler temperatures so in earlier spring they really took off and put out about 9 large fruit, probably by like May or so. But then the huge green fruit just hung there and all flowering stopped as the temps got warmer. They were getting pretty direct sun for like 10 hours which isn't ideal for rocotos so I moved them to full morning sun and afternoon dappled shade.
Flowering resumed but it never set any more fruit and the gorgeous full size fruit took until September to ripen fully. It's almost like the cooler fall temps brought on the ripening. Most varieties come from the Andean mountains which is why like the cooler temps and some shade.
Here is a pic of the fruit, the large ones are the rocotos. They are so lovely, thick flesh like an apple and very weighty! And hot as hades.
Oops I lied I just checked the dates on my pictures and the first fruit was just starting at the beginning of July. I do recall the fruit matured early and then just hung there forever til fall until the color came on.
