I do prefer individually planted seedlings. A plug tray with the right plug size is the best choice. The more sensitive varieties (of Pelargoniums as well as others) may exhibit intolerance to being dug-out. Often they are stunted.

Ready-made plugs such as "jiffy pellets" are best. They are expensive, however, and filling the tray with non-pelleted soil still gives you a cheap yet viable options.

They've been in individual pots for a while now and seem to be going well. One even has a flower bud on it. I planted 5 in the ground as well. I'm not sure how much water I should be giving the ones in the ground - is it true that those ones will be needing to be kept drier?

I think that soil humidity is more stable and more favorable for most plants, for several reasons: Garden soil has more sand, which does not retain too much water and the sheer size of a garden plot coupled with good drainage (relative to peat) makes humidity levels more stable and less prone to fluctuations.

Heavy-clay soils are a problem though. They retain too much water. Light-clay or sandy soils pose problems in a dry season. In the Mediterranean region, where the summer is dry, drip irrigation will be very helpful.

The answer is not a definitive yes or no. It goes down to the type of soil you have, and you may need to experiment with it. Keep some in the ground and see how they develop.

Unless you live in drought area, I don't think Pelargoniums in the ground will need much watering at all after first transplanting. They are semi-succulent, coming as they do from Southern Africa. In fact in rainy climates the ground can get too wet for them.
