Your room is wonderful. I love the green and the dark wood. Are you allowed to hire a carpenter? If so, then have the carpenter build in shelves with cabinet doors in the same stained rough wood as the mantlepiece and at the same level as the mantlepiece so that the build-ins flank the fireplace. Your cloches and other accessories can go on top. Maybe leave some shelves open.

Some other thoughts:

--As for a rug, Google "Green, brown, (accent color), patterned rug." Get one to connect all your furniture at the fireplace end. You can go modern, traditional, or maybe even a animal skin patterned rug. Then maybe a wide runner in complimentary colors that lead from kitchen to the living room area. Wayfair and Overstock are great for finding decently made rugs in natural materials in all styles, patterns, colors.

--Move your side table closer to the couch to create a more open passageway to living room area.

--You could also place an industrial wood and iron console sofa table behind the couch.

--Make sure to consider the kitchen and dining areas in terms of color and style. Please provide more photos of those areas so that you harmonize all the adjoining areas.

I like housegal200's suggestions about the console and the built-in cabinets...I hadn't considered built-in's! I'll ask my husband; see what he says. So you think the same wood as the top of the mantel and the trim? You don't think that's too much wood? Too heavy? I'd also considered a black bar cabinet on either side? No to that? You won't hurt my feelings! :)

The photo's too dark sorry! But the island is black and we have a red Viking range the other cabinetry is all brown. Also, the pendant lighting and chandelier need updating please advise if you have any ideas on those too!

Lol...my husband just doesn't care about decor and thinks we can do it ourselves but I'm not any good at this stuff and have no family around to ask advice. I don't want to spend more than $800 on a living room rug - we have kids and lots of house guests drinking wine, etc...I'd be too worried about a really expensive rug from rugknots but thanks for the advice and compliments! I like the white background because it would brighten the room but worry it'll also show a lot of stains! Thoughts?

I did mean similar wood, but you could also get one recycled wood console cabinet with doors that fits one side and an opened legged console that fits the other side. I think built-ins, though, of recycled wood, are the way to go. Here are some rugs I found at Overstock--probably not quite right. I love the West Elm one, but it might be too light as you mention. Get samples first to make sure the greens work with your walls.

My thoughts on shelves and open cabinets. Don't. You need to fill them, dust them and keep them looking nice. Looking at the room, I might suggest that you bring in the black chair on rt of FP and then put the floor lamp behind in more in the corner. Maybe a tall potted tree on the left of FP. Get a sofa table and break up the boring back from kitchen side.

Instead of art over FP, try a mirror and then a nice piece of art on left.

I think you need some color (other than browns and greens) in the room. It's lovely, but blending a bit too much. Consider an area rug something like this. Then add some low cabinets on either side of the fireplace if that's what you want. Add some sconces above each cabinet. Add some blue colored pottery pieces around the room to pick up the blue from the area rug. I agree you need something bolder above your fireplace. But the artwork you have is lovely. Just needs a bigger bolder frame to stand apart from the wall.

Also, if you are not "allowed" to hire a decorator, take pictures of your room to a reputable furniture store. Their staff decorators do not get paid by you and can suggest some options you can see in their showroom.

I think you need a big beautiful oriental rug in there too:) Look on ebay - seriously! You can get great deals and an oriental rug is a tough workhorse that will stand up to pretty much anything you dish out (as long as it's wool, not silk!)

Search for caucasian rugs, persian rugs, egyptian mamluks...all of these styles will have colors that work for you...personally, I think you should lean towards something with a red ground.

I would put the 2 sofas facing each other with a round metal coffee table. Light colored area rug. Lose the leather recliner and get a fabric one in a color with some pattern. I wouldnt do anything on sides of fireplace. Anything you buy needs to be not brown as I feel you need some interest and metallic and color. I love the art piece but a wider or square size would be better proportion.

Lamps need updating. Look for bases in metallics or ceramic.

Light fixtures in kitchen/dining are very dated so yes update those. Maybe a globe or cage chandellier over dining table.

Youve got a great house!

Hi you have great seating and I love the fireplace,combined with the floors and you have a great starting point.
I recommend benches with shelving underneath for books on either side of the fireplace, paint or stained to match the stone and add cushions to the top matching your seating. Have the cushions made half width so you can use them as needed. Add green spider plants under the benches on the ends to contrast and bring in some primary color.
You should be able to pick up off white wool carpet at a local carpet contractors and have them finish the edges for under $500 for that space.
I would also change the wall color slightly, what you have is an earth tone I would go a little more pastel.
For the lighting I would go brushed or polished Nickel or Chrome and frosted glass in an Art Deco style.
You also mentioned changing the table,I would do all 3 of them. they don't need to match in design but they should follow a theme. Again Nickel or Chrome and glass would work or you could lean towards a Korean or Japanese style lighter wood color.
My last recommendation add lots of plants lush green plants like banana trees.

No worries! I would recommend though that you don't spend $800 on a synthetic rug. They are made from polypropylene, a derivative of petroleum and they are basically plastic. They fall apart and will melt and just aren't worth the investment. If you're looking to save money, look around at oriental rug dealers and try to find a damaged one. The dealers will usually take off about 60% because of a tear. You can get a 7x10 for about $900 if you are willing to look around and be persistent. BUT you NEED to see it in person to make sure it is wool and hand knotted.

What I would not do though is take the ebay and craigslist advice. Yes, there are people on there who just need to get rid of their rugs but shady dealers know that people think like this, and take advantage. If you can return the rug, and do not have to pay a "restocking fee" and you'll get your money back, they I think ebay is fine but don't fall for stories of " oh I'm retiring and just want to get rid of it" or "I just hate it and I want a new one" or " I inherited this from my great aunt and I never liked her anyway". More likely than not, there is a shady rug store owner just seeing if he can rip someone off.

I would focus on rearranging the seating configuration. Removing the table won't open it up enough for good flow. Should be easy to move them around until you get to the right configuration.

I just came across this Houzz photo that shows the tops of bookshelves extended at the same height as a mantel. You could do something like this but with cabinet doors over some of the shelves if you want to close off the shelves.
