I used to live in coastal So Cal and Bay Laurels did okay, but if you are farther inland, I would look around your town to see if you spot any growing or talk to a nursery like Village or Monrovia. If in doubt, I would consider a substitute for a hedge. Plant a Bay in a more protected area of the yard if you want it for the scent. They are slow growing, so use as a hedge may not be such a good choice.
