small winter home

We are retired for four years, and for the 2nd time, we are renting a place in Yuma, AZ for Jan-Mar... becoming snowbirds. It is a 'park model', a 23 year old, fixed in place, trailer-type manufactured home. Without insulation, they are geared for mild weather living. It is 400 sf, one bedroom, one bath and 11' x 32'.

What fun this is! There is a little clubhouse here with many activities for we oldsters, and most of the others (of the 250 units) own their tiny winter homes. The only challenge is cooking since counter space is small. These are very modest units, and not at all like elegant RV motor homes.

This makes our 1300 sf 'real house' seem huge! We are loving the lack of winter weather, and I think we will feel lost come April, upon returning to our huge castle.

Just though this is fun to share...

glad you're enjoying the non snowy weather! I'm a bit NE of you - up SE of Chandler. does it get cold down there at nights? we can get down to close to 30 here.

my neighbors are snow birds. they're here from usually oct - mar or april. they go back to MO for Christmas and then back here within a day or 2 after it. I love having them here! they too are retired and have been coming here since I moved here in '98. they have a regular single wide mobile home on 2 plus acres next to me.

Hi Kitykat and welcome! Thank you so much for sharing your snowbird adventure!

I would LOVE to be a snowbird someday!! It sounds like you have a nice set up there. It's a long story of how and why I've ended up where I am (Spokane, WA), but I am NOT a fan of winter!

Does your little park model come furnished? It sounds like so much fun, especially with all the activities! Does everyone in the household have to be 55+? I would want to bring my daughter, who is currently 30, but it seems a lot of places won't let her in, even though I'm 55.

Thanks again for sharing, and have a wonderful, warm winter! :-)

The lowest it has been is mid 40's at night, now in 50's. Yesterday was the first day over 70... today upper 70's, next week hitting 80..

The unit is fully furnished w/ queen bed, and all sort of storage nooks. Even a w/d in the shed! Again, the provisions are an interesting mix of old linens, assorted pans and kitchen implements. We went to the store and bought a few things to fill in: a tea kettle/ wood cutting board/ nite light/ extra hangars... and good bed pillows (to take home). I bring my own cast iron skillet, a sharp knife, blender, favorite spices, and recipe bookof favorites.

Most of the folks here are from WA, OR, and BC and Alberta. Other Kansans are not to be found. Most of these parks, and there are so very very many are 55 and above, but I think just one resident needs to be. The Yuma year population is 100,000 and jumps to 250,000 for the season... Nov - Apr. Driving around you would think you were in Canada. That is where most of the car plates are from!!!

Sounds delightful. Up here in the Frozen Northland, it's 26 degrees and we're expecting a blizzard... :/

Sounds wonderful. As much as I love the snow I am enjoying today's unexpected break in storms. The club house sounds fun. We have talked many times of doing the snow bird thing but we would have to tow a second trailer behind us for all the dang animals. LOL Enjoy your warm winter.

Sounds like fun, thank you for sharing your adventures. You have to care for each other to get along in 400 square feet, and it's wonderful that you do!

Kity - sounds like a cool place to be. You are right about getting used to size -- we downsized from 2600 sqft to 1000 (it was our weekend cabin). When we'd come visit the little cabin, it always seems so small. Now it seems just right, and when ever I see a bigger house on those hgtv shows, I always wonder what they do with so much space, ha ha.

When I quit working, I might have to look into a park model option. Does the price of everyithing go up in Yuma during snow bird season?

kitykat, that is exactly what we want to do. We just can't figure out where we want our 'summer home' to be. Somewhere with pleasant summers is all we have figured out so far.

There is an RV park near us, where some folks keep their RVs all year, and spend their summers on the river. Your winter home sounds like a lot of fun. Do you have outdoor space for a grill and temporary counter set-up? Cooking outside might make up for lack of space inside.
