Pop beans?

On another fantastic but long thread the book The Resilient Gardener: Food Production and Self-Reliance in Uncertain Times Book link was linked. In the Amazon blurb it mentioned pop beans. Googling didn't bring up a lot. A high altitude bean that was "popped" like pop corn to save cooking fuel. It appealed to me as another way to get protein. One guy tried to grow them in a greenhouse, beause they are heat and day length sensitive. He did not have a lot of success. A few people suggested chickpeas would pop, but no one ever came back and said they actually DID it. When I find something new to me I can't let it go. I will have to get this book, but in the mean time what do the great gardening gurus here know about this.

I don't know much about them but doubt they'd work here. Popping beans are from the Andes Mtns so our climate would be all wrong for them. Nunas are not adapted to temperate climates like ours. There have been some past discussions on them over in the Bean & Legumes forum, so you might do a search over there for those discussions, or George may remember reading them. I think someone who is gardening in some areas of the Pacific NW, if they live up in the cooler mountain areas, might have a chance with them.

I think maybe Richard Lloyd, in Washington State, may have grown them. Also Darrel Jones of Selectedplants.com . I bet he has tried them, and in the back of my memory, I think he might have had some success.
