We are remodeling our main living area, which has three spaces that abut each other: an entrance foyer, a dining room, and a sunken living room. In the sunken living room, we have installed and stained the baseboard and window trim a warm medium brown (orange-leaning). We plan to install carpet in this room. At the same time, we are planning to do hardwood flooring in the dining room and entrance foyer.

Should we try to find hardwood flooring that will match the wood trim that you can see across in the living room? My husband wants to go with a darker wood for the flooring, even though we can see the orang-ey wood in the living room. In either case, we would do white baseboards on the hardwood floor areas. I'm not crazy about doing white and stained baseboards in the same visual area, but we're not going to be changing the wood stain any time soon.

Oh, and the kitchen has antique white cabinets and travertine-like porcelain floor that you can see from the living room and dining room.

I myself like a lighter tone rustic or even pickled look to wood flooring and wonder how that might look with the stain color that I'm stuck with. (They did a great quality wood finish--I'm just not super happy with the color).
