I've never propagated a strep this way, just by division. Now, AVs I've done this way :) It just seems to me that my streps produce enough crowns that I don't need to resort to leaves...but I'm glad at your success.

Hi dbarron! I didn't have any streps to begin with. I figured it would be just like violets. And it is in a way. But there is another way to propagate them also. Google it,,,,,but in a short you take out the "rib" and turn the two pieces remaining on their cut side. At this point you can cut them in smaller pieces or one big long one I guess. Put the cut side in medium and go from there! But this is just by memory. Google it to see if I forgot a step.

I did mine just like you would do a violet leaf. I did have to cut a couple of the leaves in 1/2 because they were very long. But I only lost a couple and I am so thrilled that I can see babies!!!!!

Hopefully someday I will have a pot full of crowns and I can share!!!!! Rosie

On a serious note, it would guarantee that I would at least get babies. Even if I had a few fatalities.

But I did well with these, and hopefully I can experiment with your friend's method if I get another leaf or two. But Irina, he put the lid down on the clamshell?? The cuttings got no light???? I thought they needed light to start growing??? Did I miss something?

Plastic clamshell, not styrofoam - yes, they do need light.

Vertical planting gives you few strong starters, horizontal- 100 flimsy ones. You can baby all of them up. For me - the idea of 100 identical baby streps gives me shivers. It is like putting 100 zukkini plants in a garden.

OMG, so sorry Irina, I can't remember the last time I have seen a clear clamshell and all I could think of was the white styrofoam ones! How dumb of me.

Oh and guess what? I have one more baby on another leaf! Ona Bak. So happy!

Great photos, Rosie! I am so happy for you and your success at propagating the strep leaves. Just remember, they're going to take up a lot more room than your average AV - so I am glad you didn't end up with 100 of each because I KNOW you; you wouldn't be able to do anything else but pot up each and every last one of those babies....and then there would be no room left in the house for you, DH, doggies OR dolls, LOL.

Hmmmm,,,,,DH, doggies OR dolls, I will miss them! And of course for anyone who knows me I am only joking.

BUT I do have a plan. See,,,,,Anne is right. I will keep on potting, loving, having and wanting more. AND I will find room for them! My windows are the old farmhouse type (house built in 1879 about) and if I could only figure out how to make or get more of those old timey shelves that hang off the window. I don't want screw in shelves. Oh don't worry, I am figuring it out!

PS. Just bought a pretty violet from Meijer two nights ago. Opt something. Very pretty sort of a coral pink. I just love it!!!! (and here we go again!)

Streptozuks are coming to town...they are going to invade Rosie's farmhouse...

We are getting our turn of a snow now. It is already white - and it will be 12 more inches tomorrow. Nothing like Washington DC - and we are better equipped to take it - but I better do my grocery run right now.

Well one until more of the kids move out. Currently the cart hopping orchids have been coming home with me. The kids are concerned that I will be moving them out. That is what I can do over spring break turn their bedrooms into a jungle like the rest of the house.

Well, slowly the plants take over. First the windowsill, then a table is moved in front of the window, and then,,,,,,,,,,. Your kids should be scared!!!! lol Rosie

So nice to see this post here! I propagate a LOT of streptocarpus and have an idea folder dedicated to it with lots of photos. But I do aim for quantity so the more the merrier. Good job!
