Kitchen nook

I have an under-the-stairs nook in my kitchen and am not sure if I've furnished it in the best way... I have kids stuff under the stairs and added a bench and small rug, though the bench is now blocking the kids from the book that they love. It looks too empty when no furniture is there. Does anyone have a recommendation or feedback on the current set up?

What about taking away the bench, replacing your small rug with a bigger one, and doing some floor cushions? Maybe something like this:

Thanks. The kids like playing under the stairs, so I don't want to take that away from them and build it out for storage, but I am more interested to know other choices on the furniture (bench and rug). Thanks!

That's a good idea. I don't think furniture is the right thing to put in that cubby. Maybe just leave it.

Make it 100% kid friendly. But I wouldn't have any furniture in front of it. Or objects that don't really relate to each other. What about a soft curtain that will give the wall a finished look, something that can be also held back.

A good reading light and outlet with USB charger built in, a drop down desk for doing homework, book shelves, storage for school supplies, the ceiling and/or a wall or two with chalkboard paint or whiteboard paint, a bean bag chair, and a mini fridge to keep them hydrates and fed because they will never come out, i would live there! Good luck!

Oh, almost forgot! Get yourself a cozy chair to relax and read in nearby and spend some down time with your kid/s. You can enjoy a little Michelangelo time together and share your creative sides too :)

I would suggest a curtain and make it into a fort! Put a small shag carpet in the space , mount glow in the dark stars , then have a bucket basket filled with flash lights , books , etc. . Thus can be the coolest space in the house for the kids . Also maybe use a round ottoman in place of the hard edge table .

I like the simple lines of your room so the ottoman would bring a curve line to the space ... Also a larger area rug in a pattern would trick the eye to think there is more there than just an ottoman . One more suggestion is maybe use chalk paint on the half wall behind the bench

Can you show the rest of the space to the right? If there's enough space there, you may be able to turn the seat around with the small side against that wall as far right as possible to create a larger nook for the kids to play (with a rug on the floor). That way they're not spilling into the larger living area and are contained within the area, and the seat is usable.
