Is there a particular style you like?

In general, most are not using valances right now - except I do see them in French Country design. I do have valances in my own home:)

Here are some possibilities:

Simple drapery hung higher up, as sheers and valances will make the room feel dated. Can't tell much about your room, so I would just go with a solid that compliments the décor in your room.

I agree with taking the rod nearly to the point of the ceiling. But since the room seems very dark, in order to create balance, it would be best to use light textured/color panels.
Also, you might want to consider using one long rod to frame both windows (instead of separately). And then placing a 3rd panel in between them to cover that small section of wall for a more dramatic effect

Don't forget that the length of the panels should be no shorter than 1 inch from the floor

I noticed that your windows have baseboard heat below them. In that case go for roman shades. Drapery panels should just barely touch the floor but if you still use the baseboard heat then you won't want to do that.

Roman shades go just to the window sill. Look on Blinds.com

if you have separate baseboard vents in the middle of each window you can have panels that you dont close... have a shade under the panels to pull at night. if the baseboard heat is continuous where it disappears behind the chair then no panels.

The base board is only one under that one window I do have cordless shades I pull down at night they are hidden under current curtains I like a more traditional style any help with this room us appreciated.

You have somewhat modern furnishings so I would do a white/cream linen in a geometric design with the design coordinating or contrasting wiht your dark walls. Hang at close to the ceiling and do double panels on either side of the window for weight and fullness.

Remove the end table by wall and push sofa to the wall. Hang sconces on wall behind sofa for lighting. Try bringing your love seat next to the corner of the sofa for an L shape so the piece is closer to the TV. Put you TV on a 45 degree angle in the corner for symmetry.

Hang your painting over the fireplace and add twin pottery big pieces on either side; what you have is probably lovely but it is invisible and you need something on this wall to balance the sofa on the opposite wall.

Find a pair of sleek chairs to go in front of the two windows behind the loveseat with a small table and lamp that you already have by sofa. Combined height from top of lamp to bottom of table on the floor should be 58-64 inches at top of lamp shade.

Put the curio on the wall space between fireplace and front twin windows.

Add a cocktail table in the new L shape area of sofa/loveseat combination.

Place a bright colorful stripe 8 x 10 rug under legs of sofa/love seat.
