Furniture placement rules

I have an open floor plan between my kitchen and dining room. I am getting furniture in about a month and was planning on having one of the sofa backs facing the kitchen. Was considering a sofa table to back up against the sofa but not sure how much room I need between the kitchen island stools and the couch and/or sofa table. What is the rule and what is the minimum amount of space I can get away with?
