Peanut shells in the garden

I was at my local extension service getting a soil test and got to talking with a Master Gardner. He suggested that one thing I could add to my garden or compost pile to boost nitrogen levels was peanut shells, since they are part of the lequme family and nitrogen rich. Has anyone here used them straight into the garden or added them to a compost pile? I don't have a ready source for peanut shells, but it's an interesting concept.....
