Pruning and transplanting

I have an avocado tree, grown from the pit, that I am growing in a 12" pot. The pot has ample drainage and is filled with potting soil. The tree is currently about 4' tall. Based on my research on this forum, I may have let it dry out as many leaves have turned brown and are dropping. Hopefully increasing my watering schedule will help that.
Since I am in North Carolina, I keep the tree indoors during cold weather and on a covered porch with morning sun during warm weather. I also have a makeshift greenhouse in my garage that I will put it in for more light (window + 2 different color florescent bulbs), but only when temperatures are acceptable (I have two heat lamps, but during the cold of winter, it still can drop into the low 40s in the greenhouse).
My ultimate questions are:
1) How should I prune the tree to limit its height so I can continue to move it around and have it indoors.
2) What pot sizes/plant heights should I be considering for repotting?
Thanks
