It' February

I thought I was going to have something. I bought a Brunfelsia nitida a few months ago in a attempt to keep up with you folks here. It formed buds and looked like they were about to open, but I came home yesterday and they were all on the floor.

I grilled everyone in the house and apparently no one was in the room. So what happened?

    James,

Sorry you lost your buds. Perhaps it was a change in humidity? Hopefully come spring and summer you'll get some blooms. I've grown it once and killed it. It did bloom once for me and the blooms smelled like cloves. Tovah Martin in The Essence of Paradise states it can be rather difficult to grow in a pot and might be better suited for a greenhouse.

You might want to try B. americana or if you've the space B. gigantea which has a glorious scent IMO.

    Dar,

    Thanks for the beautiful pics!

    hey guys!

just wanted to mention that I left my 50cm tall brunfelsia jamaicensis outside uncovered this year and it survives just fine till now, so if your min temps are around 0 C you can get away with it ;-)

Drizzly but mild outside. Air is redolent of sarcocca hookeriana (amazingly the scent is wafting around from front garden to backyard), winter honeysuckle, and of course, various daphne

Spring is definitely in the air!

Ps. A few hellebores are in bloom. So pretty - if only they smelled nice too!

Thanks for the info Robert, I wish I knew that sooner. I was trying to decide between the nitida and jamaicensis and went for the smaller one due to limited space.

I guess I will need to make room for one more.

I've been enjoying the scent of Hyacinth orientalis that I got at Walmart in a glass vase for $3.33. Sometimes you can't pass up simple things, especially in winter. ;)

That is lovely Robert. The purple ones like in your picture are my favorite for scent. I bought some purple ones that turned out to be a very pale lavendar and the scent was so-so.

Trachelospermum is blooming and Mysore Mulli ready to bloom indoors. Mysore mulli is a surprise. It barely has any leaves but putting out buds. I am in Virginia and with the snow we are having these beauties are a welcome change.

How lucky you are to have such flowers to sniff in winter! :) I always look forward each year to sniffing the first sambac jasmine blooms.

Last night I enjoyed the light refreshing scent of Chloranthus spicatus (Chicken Feet) blooming in my bedroom. This beast is now 3 feet across!

I think I just got lucky for these to bloom now :) I have so many jasmines in my basement and want everything to bloom. Not enough place though :(

that's beautiful Robert. How big is that pot?

12" wide and 10" tall. I have it in some Styrofoam pot I bought from Garden Ridge years ago. I've found they have deep roots.

It's been enjoying dappled sun outside all day on this unusually warm sunny winter day. :)

Mine needs a bigger pot. It's still in an 8" clay pot. :)

My goal for this year is to repot all my plants. Lol. Oh, I bought a murraya from Logee last week, I really miss it. And now I have a huge urge to get some Tea Olive :))

I bought osmanthus fudingzhu last month from logees. It came with beautiful blooms and now it's putting out new leaves. I already miss the blooms.

One more jasmine bloom early in the month. Jasmine grandiflorum flore plena from logees.

Yay! Kemistry is one of us! ;)

I've been quite shocked by the amount of blooms my Osmanthus fragrans has been putting out this year. Jasminegal, try to keep it cool at night and I'm sure you'll get more blooms soon. :)

Thanks Robert..I am keeping it on the windowsill. Hopefully it will bloom more. Your plant is so beautiful :) Funny thing is only me and my older son can smell the osmanthus. My hubby and younger son didn't get any smell. LOL!!! One of my friends could smell the garlic leaves growing next to osmanthus but not the sweet blooms!!!

I just can't keep an osmanthus happy. : )) But now I'm eyeing the reblooming orange (Echo Orange). Almost Eden doesn't have theirs in stock, so if I get it from NurCar I'll be tempted to grab the Fudingzhu too : )

Almost forgot my Sarcococca x confusa from Plant Delights has been blooming. To me the scent is sort of a generic floral scent like Murraya paniculata so it doesn't wow me but it's nice to have something to sniff at this time of the year. :)

My mysore mulli finally blooming. I am in winter heaven with the flower perfuming the area :)

Damn that generic floral scent Robert! Speaking of which, the Daphne 'Eternal Fragrance' that I have is starting to bloom en masse. I am noticing that the scent is more complex than I once thought because I have previously said it smells a lot like Murraya paniculata. I think I am starting to like it. (Will get a picture of it when it stops raining).

Here's Daphne Eternal Fragrance. Too bad the rain is hampering on its scent.

    Adding J. humile Revolutum 2/19/2016.

My 'Eternal Fragrance' is blooming too. It's the Old Reliable, haha.

I just noticed the tippy top of the magnolia maudiae tree is in bloom. What! Global warming for sure. What a mild winter...

Wow Maggie! That Maudiae is gigantic. Lovely.

Thanks Dar. It really is wonderful; the whole lane will smell of it soon.

Here is another giant - daphne 'Zuiko Nishiki'. I am so pleased with it. It is quite large, every terminal is in bloom, and is insanely fragrant.

Ahh.. the smell of daphne... :))

    Your daphne is stunning!

You'll be happy to know my scent report for Camellia 'Scentuous' has greatly improved since our nighttime temps are currently above freezing so I can leave it outside. Outside the scent is more clean and lovely. It reminds me of Magnolia liliiflora (tulip magnolia).

What a cool flower form! Love it. If I find it here I'd grab it.

So, you don't think you can plant in ground in your zone?

I have Camellia 'Scentuous' myself last year i was really short for space so i thought i would try it outside! It seems to have come through the winter here fine but there is no sign of any flower buds this year :(

Maggie i love your michelia :) mine in now planted outside it is still a small plant i have had a bit of damage to new leaves but part from that seems ok

Logee's says Camellia 'Scentuous' is hardy to zone 8 so I can't grow it outside during the winter.

The lable on mine says " greenhouse only" but they used to say that about many rodadentrum/Camelias. But having said that like i said before no flowers this year :( i think the plant might be ok but the frost kills the flower buds off

Hmm thought I saw it labelled Zone 7.

Fragrant, my maudiae was more sensitive to cold when younger but now it is quite vigorous. It has come through freezing temps when it seemed all the leaves were frozen and shrunken. Now I find that it sheds some old leaves in the fall (much like the grandifloras) after the dry summer spells, and that's it. I've left the lower branches so I can smell the blooms more easily.

(I am waiting for photos of your wieseneri - sigh. That is still my holy grail and I am constantly searching for availability online)
