Ok I've got roots already! They look pretty strong and robust but should I wait to cut until the rootball is very developed?

Also where do I cut the branch? Right at the main stem? How much length do I leave on the cutting below the rootball? Would that leave me with a nice little viable cutting?

The more roots the less stress when you cut it off from its source.

You do not want to get excited and rush it now seeing roots, let container fill up with them so it is a good solid rootball that holds together when removed.

Cut off right on inside off container at the wall just as it pokes thru it.

Thanks for your help, I wish had waited because I just went ahead and the root ball fell apart as you predicted!

I think I saved it, enough roots were still attached to get it started I think. I didn't think they would be so fragile!

Can I do anything with the little stump of stem I snipped off under the rootball to fit it in my pot? Would that make a cutting? Thanks!

Eventually it should sprout at a node .

If it's very small/short which I imagine it is you can just throw it away, theoretically it could probably be rooted as a cutting but not sure how difficult that would be.

Thanks, it is about 5 inches long. I'll keep it moist and see what happens, just for fun!

severed airlayer from the parent plant.

Thanks Martin, that's what I had intended to do but it was a super long branch so I needed to trim I down a bit :).
