What does 'MIKADO' look like?

Just looked out the window, it's snowing here too. :( It was supposed to snow last night so I had hoped we had bypassed it.

Mikado is another Fernwood Nursery hybrid (possibly) from what I can gather (not that everything on the net is true). I have 'Fernwood' and it's vase shaped, Mikado's juvenile leaves look just like it but apparently when it grows up the leaves are straight up. This is not my photo, it's from an older thread, 2 years later after the gentleman bought the little plant. Sansevieria bacularis.

We're supposed to be in a deluge, El Nino - but now they're saying we won't get the rains because El Nino is too big (to fail, LOL) - we have some high pressure system that won't let the storm approach SoCal & we're breaking temp records. I just hope it doesn't jack up the fruit trees (as in bloom and then another freeze).

So, is Mikado another name for bacularis?

Hard to tell. Some have it as S. cylindrica, some as S. bacularis. This is from a cached ISS List: S. bacularis ‘Mikado’ [s.22]p.5 ISS List 2011

I really like the form of the plant I bought as "Fernwood" - if the little "Mikado" turns out to be the same plant with a different name, that's OK - the only way to know is to grow them both & see how the little one turns out. Time will tell. To be honest, several of the plant labels at The Huntington did not jibe with what I've seen online either so I've decided not to get to attached to names or species (without a key). I'm just growing pretty plants that I like (for now).

It is so nice that you are close enough to the Huntington to shop there. I would be over there a lot if I were you. I did get to visit another c&s garden in California. It is in Walnut Creek, or nearby. Wonderful place.

I got to go to the Huntington a few years ago. My son and I did walk the gardens but the greenhouses were closed so we went inside and saw the Gutenberg Bible, Blue Boy, and Pinkie, among other things. The inside areas were just as impressive as the gardens.

I just remembered the name of the garden I went to. It's the Ruth Bancroft Garden. There is a nice website with pictures.

I've never been to this garden. Thanks for reminding me about it. The Huntington doesn't always have plants for sale. I asked about the online plants, if I could buy them there, the C&S conservatory staff didn't know anything about it (so, no). I believe the conservatory is only open on Saturdays. There is another massive greenhouse with tropical plants, elsewhere in the gardens. I agree, the art gallery is beautiful. I'm not as crazy about the Library, maybe because I can't really see in there, its so dim to protect the documents.
