Add some art or a mirror above it and maybe some storage baskets on the shelf for keys etc.

you can add a slim wooden tray to put ur keys and maybe bring some height with tall sleek vase with some tulips in them and you can add 2 mirrors or 2 same size canvas prints in middle...you can shop at home goods for good deals.

If needed, you can paint the brackets. Add a mirror or a trio of pictures above it. Add a bench or 2 ottomans beneath it.

Not sure if you have to keep the shelf or like it. If you have to keep, boxing it in would be a very modern way to update. Maybe you could just change the supports to something heavier like wood, which will make it feel more modern or paint black. Whatever you decide for the shelving, when accessorizing layer for a modern look (see 2nd picture).

can you take the glass off the top, and store it? Or just paint a piece of plywood and put it over top of the glass.

That is a good idea that flair lighting has...you can purchase a shelf in various colors from HD for about $20.00 and put it on top.
