I have a question Mentha, do you stage at the show, right before the show and transport, or earlier so the plant establishes in the show container?

Usually right after buying it. Sometimes I would get lucky and buy it already staged, especially Sans. You want the plant established in its pot, that will be its home, you don't take it out after the show. Always bring extra top dressing when you go to a show and transport your plants in a box.

GROW in Cambria will stage your plants for you as part of the price of the plant and pot. They also give discounts if you're a member. Some C&S Societies have staging parties about a month or so before the shows so that newbies can get advice from more jaded showmen. At least the one in SLO does. You should also head up for that show, while it's small compared to ones down south and up north it is probably one of the nicer shows I've been to.

How do I find out about shows? Are there any up here in the North East?

Find your local garden club or if you have one, C&S Society and they should have a listing. Your local fair should also have a plant show. You can also find the area forum here on GW and post your query.
