I don't know if this is your forever home or not, but I'd suggest setting up the shower for "universal design" meaning good access through the door ( wheelchair etc) and also curb-less if you can, again for access down the line. Creating a universal design for children through older folk will also help the resale value as well. Do some homework on line.

You can do a curbless shower if you are able to drop the floor below your shower space. It depends on what is below the shower. If it is a concrete floor on grade, you can take out the concrete and pour new concrete lower.........If it is a wood floor over a crawl space it can be done, but might be more difficult depending on the framing of the floor. If you are on the second floor, it may also be possible........You will need a structural engineer to work with you.

Another option is to do a rolled curb which sits on top of the floor and is a smooth rolled shape allowing wheel chairs to roll over the top easily........

I can't find any good images of a finished shower with a rolled curb, but I am posting a photo of the piece that would go under the tile at the entry to the shower to create the curb. As you can see, it is rounded so that a wheel chair can easily roll over. You would use this if you don't have room to depress your floor.
