I think both of those darker stains would be gorgeous. It would be nice to see some more pics of the space. What chairs do you have in mind?

At the moment it looks like this :D don't mind the clutter..we are mid many projects lol. The table and chairs will go as soon as the new ones are ready. Chairs are ridiculously expensive so we went budget. Bought these and will be stained to match table. (May add cushions, haven't decided yet.) And a bench for the non-wall side.

Still like both of the darker!

I like the Ebony (matte finish), it's unique. My reason is that there is gray in the island and it will carry through. All the stains are beautiful so I don't think you can go wrong. :)

That's just what I was thinking! There are some very dark gray veins (maybe even black). I was just worried it would be overpowering with such a bulky piece of furniture. And a friend commented that dark furniture shows scratches and dings more..

I like the ebony. As corny ss it might sound, I think little scatches and dents over time kind of help to make a piece unique. As long as it's solid hardwood, any "roughing up" shouldn't look that bad, unless it really would bother you. I think your space can handle the ebony but at the same time do be careful with your choices of later furnishings, not to go too dark. It's light enough for the tsble, but a dark couch, dark side tables, etc etc..you get the drift:) Lovely space, good luck!!

I think your friend is correct. I'm not partial to the high gloss look, but maybe an extra coat of poly would help. We made a farmhouse table with an espresso colored stained top and white legs/side apron. However, the idea was to have a worn look with nicks and scratches. I think we put 3 coats of poly. We have a lot more work to do on this area. We also don't have really good chairs. They are so expensive so we bought a few at a tag sale and covered them. I love the darker colored woods. The light woods seem so overdone, even though we just bought this house with these light floors. :)

Amadeus, here here on the light wood being over done. My entire kitchen/entry/powder room is orange toned laminate "wood." Gag.

I like the ebony tone and visible graining which adds more interest and dimension. Will look awesome with your pendants. I would consider staining or adding a rubbed color stain over either the bench or the chairs to break up and add some color.

I love my floors. (Though I also love dark wood, but I felt the rooms needed lighter floors to help reflect and brighten the space.) They are "hand scraped and distressed" which for me translates "if they get scratched it just looks like it's intentional" (or so I hope lol!) I guess the table will have the same theme :D

I like dark wood too. But I think it looks best without too much of a gloss or shine. We just had this table made for the banquette area we are working on and I am loving the dark color of the walnut and the very subdued finish

Just an update with the finished table :) we bought unfinished chairs to go with the table and hubby stained them to match. We have 2 more chairs in the garage, but only need 5 seats on a daily basis. It looks a little sparse so I may bring in another chair to have 3 on the side near the wall. But I usually sit at the table on the non-bench side with my laptop and I like all the elbow room ;) Overall I love the table and I'm happy with the color! Still need to put some photos/art on the wall, but here you go!
