What color front door? Can vinyl siding be painted?

Once all of our snow decides to melt away, I want to get to work on the exterior of our recently purchased home. Right now it is a blah corner lot, ranch style home, with light grey vinyl siding(ugh). Looking at replacing the front door with a craftsman style and possibly painting it to give the front of the home a little character. Would love to replace all the siding with some shakes/cement board and repaint but unfortunately that is not in the budget at this point.

Any suggestions for colors that will pop?

Also, can vinyl siding be painted?

We had a black front door in our last home but not sure I want to go that route again.

Vinyl siding 'can' be painted.

There is special paint now, just for vinyl siding, with special heat reflecting qualities to it. The paint manufacturers claim that this special paint with heat reflecting qualities allows one to paint vinyl siding a darker color than it's original color.

The ONE vinyl house I've seen painted with this special paint didn't fare too well. The western exposure side of the house I can see from the street took less than 6 months of sun exposure for all the siding to warp and buckle. It looks like hell. I imagine the southern side looks even worse. Not surprisingly, the northern exposure sides looks okay.

If it has to be painted, use the special paint for vinyl, but go with a lighter color than the existing gray.

Or, don't paint and save up the cash to have the home resided.

For the door try a coral-to-red color. Don't paint the vinyl. Agree with sambar ^^^

If you go with a lighter color you will be fine and will work with the majority of exterior paints out there. You will end up dealing with sun damage in the long run just like any other siding.

LOVE the coral to red idea. I also love mustard yellow or even a deeper blue but I will have to do some more looking.

Thanks for the heads up on painting vinyl. I knew I read somewhere that it is possible, just wasn't sure how the end result would be.

Not all vinyl siding fares well with painting. A cheap vinyl siding isn't worth a repaint.

When repainting vinyl siding, be sure it's higher quality siding and be sure to use the highest quality paint like BM Revive.

Preparation is required. Follow paint manufacturer's instructions.

Remove the plastic siding and you will find some nice wood waiting to be painted. You will be surprised how much better your house will look without a plastic cover. Stay away from a Craftsman door. They belong on a Craftsman house not a Ranch. Mixing styles will look weird. Appreciate what you have.
