How do I root my Hoya?

I just received Hoya 'cuttings' from this site called Etsy.

Plant came fast and super healthy but they are cuttings and I'm not sure how to root them. As of right now I'm just keeping it in water until the roots grow by the window. Is this okay?

Sorry to say I have no clue why one would buy plant cuttings from a site specializing in handmade art (made Etsy is actually for).

Any idea what kind of Hoyas you've got? Will you be growing them indoors or out? These factors may matter.

Than again one could always do search for something like 'how to root Hoya cuttings' since you've given us so little info. to go on.

Or, you know, one could go to a Hoya forum and ask for help...jeez. Many of the same vendors who sell on eBay sell on Etsy too, so no shame there, Ayla. Sorry for the rude welcome.

There is a ton of info within this site, with many different personal preferences. My advice is to experiment and figure out what works best for you. I prefer to use rooting hormone (gel variety), fast draining mix and a heat mat without a humidity dome. When I first started out, I just stuck the stems in soil and that worked too (though it took way longer and I wasn't always successful). Other people root in water, some root in terrariums or even ziplock bags. Point is, keep asking questions, keep learning and keep us posted!

The jar of water method worked for me, but it's warm here.

If you try in potting mix, use the best quality. I'v learnt that lesson the hard way. A good coir based orchid mix will do the trick. Keep it moist but not soggy. Also make sure they are getting enough light. Cuttings in too much shade just sit there until they rot.

Let's all be nice, you can get Hoyas from anywhere from here to Thailand. I myself have perused the easy listings for Hoya on numerous occasions.

I used to root in water, but now I always root in mix. I have good luck potting them up with a bit of rooting hormone in whatever medium I am currently using, and sticking them into a plastic bag to root. I open the bag every so often, and mist inside maybe once a week or so, depending on how humid it is. They usually take me anywhere from 1-6 weeks to root, depending on the type of hoya. Some are fussier for me than others, others take of like lightning!

My rope Hoya I got from a friend as a slip one slip . This is 6 years old . I water it once a month . It's durable but if bumped on the ends it will spit into two growths. I do get flowers twice a year and it sits in direct sunlight. I keep in in a 10 inch pot . Same size a round pot from top to bottom . I take the yellow pods off and that's about it it's a easy plant to to have and I love it !

Georgia - your "rope" is gorgeous! I'm so envious. I've never been able to keep that variety alive. I guess it just doesn't like my environment.

Ayla - I always buy already rooted Hoyas. On occasion I will root one of my own cuttings. I like to root in water or perlite so I can see the roots forming. When the roots get to a nice length I pot it up in a small (2 or 3 inch) pot. Hoyas like to be root bound and there is less chance of too much soil holding too much water.

Hi Ayla. You can e-mail me through this site and I have an article I wrote for my local C&S newsletter about different ways to root Hoyas that I can send you. Be sure to include your e-mail address when you contact me. The water method is one way, but I find the transition from water to soil is hard on them.
