Interesting about how they are stunted in pots and can be planted in the ground. Some of these I found sprouting under a mother plant that had not been tended to for some time. These may survive in the ground, but they are so small, if I put them where I want them to ultimately grow, they would be mowed down by the yard crew. I may be able to put them into a safe spot and transplant them later.

I know Steve, the article doesn't go into lots of details. It is just an overview. There is a point that if the coonties is kerpt in a short pot, the over all size of the plant could be stunted. Any cycad that starts with a long tap root, prefers being started in a deep pot, but it doesn't need a lot of width. I have used some liner pots from Better Plastics in Orlando that are 2 1\4 square by 5 inches deep, mainly because they are cheap. Stewe in Oregon have the best liner pots that are about 2 1\2 square by 9 inches deep. These are perfect for keeping coonties in for the first 2-3 years and once the stems are about 2 inches, they will have also grown a secondary root system that will fill out the pot and will be ready to plant out. When you pot them up, mix in some 360 day Nutricote and they will be lightly fertilized automatically for the first year.

Hmmm...I don't have any really deep pots, so I may just have to put these in the ground somewhere safe until they are big enough to put where I want them. Maybe I'll just put them into community 1 gallon pots for now, and transplant them next year.

If your going to do that, put them in a 3 gallon community pot

I have 13 babies, so yes, a 3-gallon should see them through a few years at least. I have one large enough to plant out this year. Should I separate them and space them out, or just leave them as they are? Maybe a stupid question, but I don't want to risk losing them. I'll probably just put them in native sand. That's what I grew them in.

I would put those babies on the ground ASAP for best growth. No winter protection needed in your area either but should, in case of extraordinarily cold spell
