Self-watering pot for moisture loving species

I would love to get some advice on how to use self-watering pots (SWP) for moisture loving species.

I got a couple of SWPs to try out. These don't have wicking strings. I like that they are transparent so I can see the water level.

I have most of my Hoyas in a fast draining soil-less mix similar to the Gritty Mix, but I'm not sure if the mix will allow enough water to wick up above. I'm going to test these pots with my mix and see how well they work. Some people use Hydroton in the SWP. I think that may work with the pot on the left in the pictures.

I read that many people use self-watering pots for H. elliptica. I am also thinking coriacea and cv. Iris Marie may like to be in the SWP.

So, what do you use as a medium in SWP? What species do significantly better in SWP? What has worked or NOT worked for you? Any tip on using SWP successfully? Any special tips on growing elliptica in SWP?

I had nothing but fungal problems with swp.

I have never seen those kind...they look good though!I have the ones you buy at Walmart.I would use you reg hoyas mix and water from the top..and leave a bit of water in the bottom of the pot...just don't have it overflowing.

Tawny, they are made by Santino. The one on the left is called Deco, and the right is Arte. I got them from Amazon for $7-10. I'm not sure if I can put a link from another retailer here...

Jimmy, thanks for the advice! I saw some at Walmart too. I heard lots of people like the Walmart ones. But they were a bit too big for me for now :( Do you put gravel or something similar on the bottom? I'm thinking I probably don't need any gravel since my mix is pretty gritty.

I don't use and gravel at the bottom...My mix is mostly chunky as well!

Self watering pots are better in non humid locations. The problem with high humidity is that water that is retained in the pot tends to grow fungus. clear pots allow more sunlight to hit the water holding area which causes fungus to develop. The pots shown are clear so fungus can be a problem if the water is not controlled in the holding area of the pot.
