Root prune? Or prune for shape?

OK I feel like I am in a "chicken and egg" situation.

I bought 2 Japanese maples in pots for 5 bucks each last Nov. I couldn't pass these up as I wanted to try to learn about the art of Bonsai. The buds are just beginning to swell on one, and a few are open on the second. Now I have a few questions.

1) do I root prune first (chicken), or leave them alone till June and start pruning for shape (egg).

  1. When I shape them, which branches should come off first?

On this first picture I am tempted to leave the large middle branch just because it is so healthy, but I am thinking that I should leave only the small inner branch second from the right, simply to increase the taper a bit. But is this too drastic?

On the second I have drawn an absolute blank.

Thanks

Ursula
