Is there any kind of "rule of thumb" when considering the size of subway tile for a kitchen backsplash? I'm re-doing a smallish kitchen c. 14' x 14' .... granite counter, cherry shaker style cabinets, walnut island.... I was going to use 4 x 10 white, matte, subway tile for the backsplash. Now I wonder if I should use traditional 3 x 6...?

The area to be covered is the 18" under the cabinets next to the stove (just 1 cabinet on each side), and the area above the sink.... again, 1 cabinet next to the sink, 10 inches under a window (above sink), and part of the half-wall next to the sink (sorry, no pictures at the moment). The walls and those of the sitting room which the kitchen is open into, are painted a soft gray, with hint of green.

We were going to do a stacked pattern behind the stove and a brick/offset pattern everywhere else.

I'd appreciate your thoughts.
