I would start with a rug. From there choose upholstery and wall color.

Maybe detail out the FP a bit more (stone facade to ceiling). If you did decide to darken up the newel posts and handrail (to match the entertainment center), maybe parts of the EC could be lightened up to match the painted spindles? (or once installed, put a white beadboard panel in the back to bring some white in there and tie it together.

Chris, how do you want to use the room? Strictly sitting? TV watching? It's possible you have too many wood pieces. Could the hall stand be moved to another room? It would also help to have measurements of the room or a plan.

I have decided to move the hall tree to the foyer but that means bringing in a small foyer desk to replace it. Also moving piano centered on big window. Buying smaller scale furniture couch, narrow Loveseat and a chair for corner. I love those photos and will be loosely following that floor plan. Thanks everyone!

Will this room be used for tv viewing or is it just having the armoire for storage?

I would suggest putting the sofa on the longest wall in the room so you will have space for lamps end tables and art work above the sofa. Move the shelving to another area or on either side of the windows with the piano between; try it and see. Put the armoire on the staircase wall and a small chair and floor lamp to the right for reading etc.

Might have room for chair/s on either or one side of fireplace and chair/s on either corner of sofa, what ever you decide for chairs; a pair or two different types.

@soosun2: it is used for some tv viewing. We are unable to move the EC and shelves from the long wall. I considered the bookshelves on either side of the big window but there's not enough room. Thanks for all of your thoughtful suggestions. Hope to post updates soon!
