Tile/Hardwood Transition help

We will be doing our front hallway in tile (currently hardwood). There is one step to the living room which is carpeted and runs though the living room. We will be re-doing the living room in hardwood (currently the carpeted spot). Not sure what to do with the step. Tile it? Hardwood it? Keep the carpet on the step? Help!

Definitely refinish the steps in Hardwood. Its very easy to find stair refinishing kits. Simply clad the tread with an oak plank that already has a nosing attached to it. The riser also gets a plank that fits tight between the lower tread and the upper nosing. These materials are even available at Home Depot or Lumber Liquidators. Most hardwood installers can carry out this work for you. Best of Luck.

ok, so here is more of a picture (child gates are currently up). and I should rephrase, we will be doing 12mm laminate vs. hardwood.

so you are doing laminate and not hardwood?

if that is the case, please look at what stair options that are available with the laminate floor that you pick.

It might make you think about using hardwood instead of laminate.

There are some laminates that have stair bullnose options available. I'd check with your laminate salesperson to see if that might be the case here.

The stairs should get the laminate and the tile stops at the base of the steps. It is a nice place to stop the tile.

we have several done laminate on stairs... do we do laminate on the floor of the step and tile like back splash???

Typically the steps match the flooring above and not below. Of course there are exceptions to every rules. Ultimately this is your decision to make.

Wood tread for sure. Just as important is I'd suggest installing the wood riser 1st and tiling to. This will eliminate seeing the wood seam from the front.
