Cherry Flooring

Hi everyone,

Since my children and I have allergies, we are looking to get our old carpet on the second floor replaced with hardwood or some other hard surface.

My house is 9 years old. It came with cherry laminate flooring and cabinets with an ivory/gold/black granite surface. I know that this style is out of date but it's not in the budget to fix. We just have enough to replace the floor upstairs. The carpet upstairs runs down the stairs and can be viewed from almost everywhere on the first floor.

We don't plan to have the house for the rest of our lives, but won't be selling for at least five years. FWIW, the house is in North Carolina where the trend is traditional although I prefer a more contemporary style.

So my question is, what color flooring should I get? Should I just have cherry installed so that the house looks consistent? Is it ok to have different colors on different floors? If so, what color would you suggest? Or do I need to save so I can do both floors at once? Or should I just get more carpet and deal with the allergies?

Any advice, opinions and/or shared experience would be really helpful.

Thanks!
