Re-potting question...

Hi! I now have all of my potting materials ready to go! I am going to use a slight variation of the gritty mix - I am going to combine it with some cactus mix and vermiculite. I realize I will need to re-pot when it compacts, but I need the watering requirements to be a bit lower than what would be required for the gritty mix - plus, I have three bags of cactus mix sitting around! ;-) Here is my question: the three trees I have are in definitely the wrong mix (from the nursery - I just bought them a few weeks ago). It takes them a long time to dry out between waterings. I have a feeling that they may be a bit root-bound also. What should I do with the mix that will cling to their roots when I re-pot? I don't want to damage the roots and would like to avoid too much shock to the trees, but I have a feeling this mix may need to be removed a bit...even if I don't get all of it off. Any ideas/suggestions as to how I should handle this?
