Ramps are delicious, but really repel people who don't eat them. You have ramp festivals in Arkansas?

I love ramps!! Do you know where your soil temperatures are at? I think mid 50s usually is about where they start sprouting here along with the first morels. My garden beds are currently in the upper 40s here in the KC area but with our warm forecast I am expecting them to climb into the 50s soon. I'm thinking ramps and morels will be very early this year...like late March. Asparagus should be early too which is usually not a good thing because the new sprouts are frost tender. Right about now is the earliest I have had Gus popping.

Never had ramps, but a late friend from West Virginia mentioned that school supers would stand at the door sniffing students as the came in during ramp season. Those that smelled of ramps got sent home.

All should eat them or none. That is what the festivals are for. One day of everybody feasting and a couple more to get civilly acceptable again after. Or so I hear tell. I hear that a real good sauna can be a real help or maybe not...

I heard a similar story about someone who ate too much raw garlic. Coworkers refused to work around him (this was in a hospital) and he finally got the word to lighten up or find other employment.

Gotta love those alliums or not but it pays to do which ever in company.

Now I'm curious-- what are they like? Very garlicky? Oniony?

Ramps are sometimes called wild leeks. The leaves are flat like a leek or garlic but the bulb looks more like a scallion. Taste is like a cross between a leek and garlic. I've seen them at early farmers markets in the spring selling for $20/lb. Like morel mushrooms they have a very short season.
