Lighting In two entryways and kitchen

Vaulted ceilings in a ranch stile home with the electrical connections for these areas(standard outlet) being located on the wall adjacent to the light fixture. Between 5 and 10 feet from the fixture which is hung from the ceiling on a hook and the power cord strung through a lovely chain across the ceiling to the plug. HELP- any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
