A sabal grow from local seed from va?A seedling?I would say no.A full grown tree?Maybe.As long as you didn't get the artic storm of the century.Sabals can survive to 7°F.That's a healthy mature one.

A strap leaf seedling obtained in early summer and allowed to grow may be able to survive unprotected during the winter since the trunk is underground. This is based on a strap leaf sabal Louisiana that was undamaged in my zone 7a yard in central Maryland.

Sabals are really cold hardy..., even the more tropical species surprise me! In my protected shelter (which did get cold down to the mid upper 20's in the (albeit brief) mid February 'polar vortex'. No issues with Sabal bermudana or Sabal causiarum (Puerto Rican Sabal). A few other subtropicals were toasted (Phoenix roebellini, Rhapis excelsa). Live and learn!

I hope a Sabal Palmetto can do well in zone 7b!
