It doesn't look like anything is wrong with the fern. Sometimes plants in stores are all squished together and the plant has to grow a certain way to get adequate light. Then when you get it home it starts branching out and doing what it's supposed to do. Looks like a bunch of new growth in the center! Tiffany has good info, follow those instructions and make sure the pot has adequate drain holes. I love ferns, and that's a really nice one!!

How much water does the crispy wave fern need & also does it need to. Be inside or out?

I have 4 of these plants. None get direct sunlight. They have excellent drainage. They are still fading, drying out and the remaining fronds are falling flat or drooping.

My apartment is dry, but I mist all my plants at least once a day.

I have no idea what's wrong with them. Crispy wave ferns are supposed to be easy to care for and low maintenance. Funnily enough, I have a majesty palm, notorious for being extremely difficult to grow indoors, and its doing amazing.

Any advice from anyone who has had the same issue with crispy wave ferns would be appreciated.

Smell your plant. Yup. If it smells funky, mushroomy, then you have root rot.

I was very careful with watering but my plants died from it all the same. I assume that the damage started in the place that I purchased it from.

I have been looking all over for these. Where did you buy them at? Also, are there other names for this plant?

I got them at All Around Flowers in Toronto. Bloor/Sherbourne. I think they may have still have some in stock.

Other name is Japanese asplenium nidus fern.

The grower I spoke with was from pick Ontario.

If you live near a nursery you can ask them to order some in for you. Or Google it and see if there's a grower in your area, they may be able to help you find a retailer

old thread I know but glad I found out this potential problem. I just brought one of these home from Home Depot. The container it is planted in is inside another that has a two inch block of floral foam in the bottom to keep it off the floor. I am assume that is to keep it out of any water to avoid the root rot you mentioned as an issue. Just posting this as a tip for anyone that happens along this older post.

I think you will enjoy it, Rebecca! :) I think the foam was used to inhabit the space, making the pot more lightweight, or to raise the inner pot to match the rim of the decorative pot. A good set-up. That enables removing the pot with holes to water, then putting back in the decorative pot when finished dripping.

The only time I have trouble with mine is if the soil gets too dry.

I bought one of these a few months back. It seemed fine for the first month but i noticed it stopped growing. When I repotted it I noticed a brown foam material at the neck of the plant down to the roots system. It blended in with the soil so I wasnt sure if i should remove it. Im wondering if this is preventing it from growing or does this plant go into dormancy?

I usually kill my ferns. But this one is thriving. I spray water everyday, water with plant food once a week. It is out of sunlight and on the cool side in my solarium. Perhaps I was lucky!!!!

I just picked up a crispy wave, it has been grown in straight peat. Hope there's some decent roots left. Is general potting mix amended with perlite a good choice?

There were several to choose from, I picked the only one that had new tiny fiddleheads in the . I wonder if the ones without new growth would have been ok?

Also, what is the name of that coleus with the green center and red edges

I used common potting soil and added dry miracle grow. It seems to appreciate the mix because it is growing. But, it is now March and all plants do better at this time of year. For the coleus, go to Wikipedia because the varieties are endless!

New birdsnest fern/crispy wave fern here. I received with a plant subscription and it died within a month! I was so bummed bcz it's so pretty. I bought a new one from FastGrowingTrees.com and also received a replacement from my subscription. I have them in a north facing bathroom window. Lots of indirect light. I mist once a day and will follow some of the recs here to only water weekly. Glad I found this thread!

Well I’m so glad I found this thread on Birdsnest Fern! The beautiful plant that I bought died in about four months first it was doing beautifully and often on. I found one at Lowe’s and it’s smaller and I planted it and I’ve been it y day and I also bought a plant light and I’ll leave that on several hours a day and it really seems to help it. It’s just frustrating to know what to do or not. I read that you can’t get water in that Birdsnest middle it self because that’s what produces the root rot. However when I spray the plant it obviously get some in that area. I just wish there were magic solution to all of it because it’s such a great plan I’m gonna keep trying again the plant lights really helping

It looks like it is still alive. A lot of faith and spray water in the center every morning. No direct sun and you should fix the problem. Don't miss one single day. These plants will remind you if you treated them well!

I have 3 of these birds nest fern Two have growth in tge middle. As asked above. ...CAN these ferns go dormit??

I have 5 of these plants in the same very large pot. Not 2 are alike. I suspect that in the spring, they will all be more 'alive' than they are today. Don't stop daily spraying and once a week watering with food. If they survive the winter months with low natural light, then they will be saved!!!!! Faith does miracles.

Doesn’t look sick. Make sure your room is humid enough, if not put pot on a pebble filled tray to increase humidity or use a humidifier

I bought a crispy wave fern probably close to a year ago and I put it right at my window and it grew a ton of new leaves then stopped. Around March it grew 2 more leaves but then stopped again (I’ve since moved it away from the window as it developed a lot of brown spots and I learnt it doesn’t like too much light). I see a lot of little buds that would usually turn into leaves, but none have actually popped up! Any ideas? I was thinking maybe a new pot? But there is about 2.5 inches between the end of the pot and the base of the plant on one side so that seems like decent amount of room to me? Please help!

I have the same problem as Tara. My plant grows well and then all of a sudden. The nubs stop growing. Happened once last year for a month. I lost ten-twelve nubs. Then it started growing again. The plant stopped growing two weeks ago and I'm wondering what I do to get it going again. What gives? Plant looks super healthy and no smell...plus she gets enough water.

Just water, water, water, never let it dry out. When you water, moisten the center well.
