I'm trying to figure out what curtains to put in my living room. I wanted something with metallic in it and bought the 2 laying on the sofa (one gold and one charcoal). The gold fits in with my pillow and painting but looks off. And the charcoal seems dark. I was also wondering if I should just do white or ivory? My main window is 72 inches across and these only come in 54inch panels, would 2 of these be too small? Also if I do the big window in the middle would it look weird not to do the 2 smaller side windows? I can't figure out if I should do just the misleading or all 3. Help!

Yikes - disregard the shades idea - you have them already!

If you do one window in a room, you do them all as it will look unfinished or that you could only get one window's dressing where you bought from and either is unacceptable.

My rule of thumb is to hang at least 3X the width of your window in curtains if you want to close them, that way it is full and not skimpy. If they are just to be decorative and not close, then one on either side of the window is fine.

As to the color... take your pillows shopping with you and get a color that compliments the couch as that seems to be the strongest color (blue) in the room. Darker curtains when closed, will make a room feel smaller, but if you have loads of light and windows, it might not be a bad thing. Lighter colors feel more fresh and open.

Your place looks beautiful and clean. I think you have a solid colour all around. Ivory does seem like a good option but it doesn't tie everything together. I agree you should take one of your toss pillow and try a printed/geometric pattern curtain. It's good if you look for something which is part sheer part dark. Good luck!!

I think you need bold window treatments to balance your bold couch. What about a layered look - flat fold roman shades for both windows in a white color like this: http://www.potterybarn.com/products/emery-linen-blackout-roman-shade/?pkey=croman-shades&croman-shades=&group=1&sku=6664564

Painting your walls something like BM gray owl can help you tie it together.

On my screen that grey is kind of slatey blue and clashes with the teal.

How does the ivory look w the wall color? If they are different enough then that would be my choice!

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. My walls are SW Agreeable Grey. I actually had my pillows with me when I ordered the curtains but when they arrived they didn't look as good when paired with the sofa and rug. Plus I think they are too small anyway because I have 12 foot ceilings. I'm going to return them and keep trying. I was trying to avoid custom treatments because of the price...

Yup it's pricey. Pay a lil visit to home depot. They have nice printed and sheer panels. But, for 12 ft you have to go custom.

Sorry I didn't crop the image but you can get an idea for printed and sheer drapes. And for a tall ceiling you should use the whole length.
