Unwrapping My Fig Tree

This is my first year of wrapping the fig tree. It is a Chicago Hardy, planted fall 2014. The first year, I only put on some leaves and it froze to the ground.

This year, I wrapped it with blanket, put on a plastic bag on top, some leaves on the bottom, then put on a recycle bin on top.

After I unwrapped the tree, I saw some top damages, black and wet. But I do not see any mold. So I cut off the top, about 1/3 to 1/2 of the branches, cut to the good wood.

I figure maybe the damage comes from the air circulation? Or from the freezing weather. This winter was mild and I suspect the moisture.
