Dark or light countertop

Very minimal update for kitchen. Am replacing appliances with stainless, and painting cabinets either hazy skies or gray huskey. Must keep almond back splash and almond tile floor. Have to use laminate for counters and would choose a light color, but can't find one I like--don't like the granite immitations. I do like oiled soapstone and basalt slate. What do you think about a dark counter in this scenario? Haven't found this combo in photos. Accent color will be lime or lemon. Thanks much.

If you go dark on your counter top, try to stay as light as you can with the cabs. And BE PREPARED...to want to change the flooring. Once you get a dark counter in there, the floors will look like you didn't have time/money/energy to change them. That will most likely bother you. Because it bothers you, you will be looking at a flooring change sooner rather than later.

Just be aware of that little tid bit of information. When you keep old design features, they will either limit your "new" features (ie. you will continue to design your space in a never ending 80's time warp) or they will look out of place VERY QUICKLY and ruin the whole thing....which leads to more changes.

Design your space BEFORE you change your space. Think this through before doing anything. As pretty as your combination will be...it will be horribly limited by the "old".

I would find a paint chip that matches your almond back splash & tile. Find something that ties your back splash color to your cabinet color.

I'm one of the few who doesn't like a lot of contrast in the fixed elements like some of darryl craters white kitchens (he does use soapstone though)...I feel the kitchen should be calm and serene and too many colors/busy patterns etc overwhelm a highly functional space. That being said, I would vote for a light countertop as well as a paint color to match the cabs. Or, possibly even a wood block counter. Soapstone is very expensive! Downgrade the counter and you can get new floors :) but any partial renovations do make old things stand out a lot more. Maybe save your money and do it all at once....
