Trudeaus' state dinner

last modified: 10 years ago

Seems like most of Canada was taking about the state dinner the Trudeaus attended in Washington last night. Did it hit the news much in the US?

I thought Obama's speech was lovely and appreciated the shout out to Cape Breton!

"Where else would we see a community like Cape Breton, Nova Scotia welcoming Americans if the election does not go their way? And to the great credit of their people, Canadians from British Columbia to New Brunswick have, so far, rejected the idea of building a wall to keep out your southern neighbors. We appreciate that. We can be unruly."

He also gave a special shout out to Margaret Trudeau which was really nice, for her work with mental health.

Four handsome people - I wish the Obamas could stick around a little bit longer now that we finally have a non-embarrassing Prime Minister. Could have really improved relations between our countries had this happened earlier.

I have a few Canadian friends living and working in the US and they really appreciated Obama's welcoming words to Canadians in the US as well.

What a nice compliment Robo. I thoroughly enjoyed the little clips I saw this morning on the news. We're on vacation so our TV viewing is erratic. The 2 couples were quite photogenic. And how nice to see the presidential daughters at their first State Dinner. I'll have to go online to watch the speeches by both Trudeau and Obama.

Yes, it's being covered, although overshadowed by last night's GOP debate.

The New York Times is focusing on the shared issues of the two countries, as well as the collegiality of Trudeau and Obama. Even jokingly called it a "bromance" in a tweet.

Only thing I've seen, so far, was about Michelle Obama's gown.

    Snore.

What a vapid nation the US has become.

I really appreciate Pres. Obama's keen intellect and very sly use of said intellect. He has foresight and wisdom, something we don't see much of in our politicians down here any longer.

    Sigh.

In one word the coverage was "refreshing". Wish there had been more of it.

The photos of these two gorgeous couple was very reminiscent of Camelot. As is said in the "south", the White House really "put on the dog".

We got a lot of coverage here in the D.C. region, from the sartorial fireworks to the elegant floral arrangements to the cuisine. Yes, I read about in in the Style section! I'm a wonk, what can I say?

Whenever there is a particularly polarizing Republican candidate poised to possibly take over the White House, whiney Hollywood types always threaten to leave. Unfortunately, they never seem to pull the trigger.

It's better for Canada that these fickle divas stay here in America and cry on their big bags of money anyway ;-)

It was amazingly pleasant to hear a positive, happy, polite news story regarding politics! They all look great.

Canada will be even more appealing to many people :-)

I was just watching a clip on Good Morning America. I usually don't care so much for what Michelle O picks out, but thought this gown looked pretty good on her. And Mrs Trudeau looks great in the purple. I also was happy to see the daughters attending and thought they looked very nice as well. It appears the visit went very well.

Oh, I loved her first inaugural gown, OP, which was by the same designer who did this gown.

I thought both the gowns were interesting and a little out of the ordinary. I can't wear a strapless gown now, let alone at 52 and 2 kids.

PS, both Canadian designers! I think was very classy of Michelle Obama to pick Jason Wu for this occasion.

I loved Michelle's gown. Not so much the First Lady of Canada's gown, but those are not colors that I like.

She wears a lot of pink. She's an interesting character...in January she had a very cringingly embarrassing moment. But you can't say she isn't earnest.

I really like Michelle's gown, but I look horrible in strapless, even when I was thinner. So, I admire anyone who can pull it off. Everyone looks great, though!

Oh yeah, Justin Trudeau is a cutie. Oh those Canadian guys my friends and I used to date . . . .

Was covered on CBS This Morning.

Re dresses: Michelle looked especially stunning ... gown and hair!

Tibb, I did too, and had high hopes for her fashion sense, but then was let down on many other occasions.

What good looking leaders! I didn't vote for Justin, but hopefully he'll do our country proud.

I voted NDP myself, I had a fabulous NDP MP (Megan Leslie) who fell victim to the Crimson wave. I hope she runs again.

JT bhangra dancing in Montreal. As an experienced goofy white person dancing at Punjabi events I give him a 10/10 on effort.

    That boy's got some moves.

He's got the lightbulb and shoulder shimmy down. Might need some focus on leg work.

    I love this guy!

That dancing video makes me like him even more.

A few years ago, Justin Trudeau was in a charity boxing match with one of our Conservative Senators, to raise money for cancer research. I bet against him, as he's pretty slim and was the heavy underdog, lacking the military background and martial arts expertise of his opponent. But he paraphrased Rocky Balboa in the movie of the same name, saying that boxing is not about who can hit harder, but about who can take more hits and keep going. He indeed proved that stamina can be more effective than brute strength, and after sustaining a pummelling first half, managed to reverse things and win the match. Canadians are now hoping that his tenacity will be employed to bring change for issues that our previous government was never willing to acknowledge or tackle. http://www.citynews.ca/2012/03/31/justin-trudeau-beats-tory-sen-patrick-brazeau-in-charity-boxing-match/

    That dance was adorable!

I thought Sasha and Malia looked lovely...can't get over how they've grown over the last 7 years.

How cute is this photo? Also now I know why Ryan Reynolds was invited.

    Darling! Thanks Robo!

Have y'all seen Trudeau's baby balancing trick? http://indie88.com/justin-trudeau-doing-balancing-tricks-with-other-peoples-toddlers-is-all-you-need-to-see-today/ My 5 year old is fascinated by it.

Ok. That is my new criteria for who gets my vote! Could he be any cuter???

robo, I've always been envious of your uplifting and singable national anthem. Now I also wish we had your PM ;)

amck, did you ever see the video where Toronto Leafs fans finished the US anthem? A nice feel good moment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHSaHRd4Q48

    Hahaha "an unmitigated disaster"...

Cuteness overload. Robo, you need to look at much, much larger houses. We can all cycle through and stay with you while we relocate. Could you please schedule regular appearances of your PM doing something from his cuteness repertoire?

I haven't seen anything about it. But since I don't work on Fridays, I wouldn't have had the early news and then Today on and the tv is hardly on most weekends. I haven't seen the first daughters in some time, they are lovely. Michelle's hair looks great! Nice pictures Robo - thanks for sharing.

I hate that I remember when Justin was born. I remember his parents making a state visit to the US with him in tow. Lots of media coverage then too. Same styles are practically in fashion too, lol!
