Mine were planted the end of year, still dormant. But you are in AR, the desert!

Just checked my garlic. I just saw some of the elephant garlic coming up. Very encouraging that I planted the latest. And they were grocery store bought....

Last year some elephants that I had written off showed up, I moved them last fall and now I also see some shoots just starting to pop up. Maybe I won't give up on elephant garlics after all. I put them beside the bed of the much more petite sand leeks; so I could tell them apart. Quite a bit of difference.

It appears a lot of people had problems growing elephant garlic. I do not know what the problems are, quality of seed garlic? or the could soil?

Next year, I want to grow them in a more sunny and east sloping area. I think the warm soil helps it.

This is just store bought garlic. I bought two bulbs. Total 15 of them.

My initial elephant garlic was also grocery store bought. It just lay there and didn't sprout until the second year, and then I only got a fraction of what was originally planted. This is the remnant of that. I have a concern that I am in a bit too harsh a climate for this crop sitting pretty much on the dividing line of Zone 4 and Zone 5 depending on which hardiness map one follows.

Wow, glad to hear they're coming up.. Mine look like the plants on the pic. I got little plants growing from bulblets that formed underground too.. I had both store bought and seed stock both just sat two years ago...

It is interesting that both Zone 4/5 and Zone 10 had problem with growing elephant garlic. I figure the Zone does not huge difference here.

It seems to me that the biggest problem is that newly set elephant garlic often takes 2 years to show up. Mine seems to have settled in to my garden now though.

Can I plant garlic in my forest? I already have wild garlic growing there.

This was my first year growing elephant garlic. I planted it in early November side by side with some hardneck garlic (one foot apart in the same bed). My hardneck is up 100%, my elephant had 0% up so I dug one up and it looked soft and was partly split at the top, but with roots that looked good. I did notice over a mild spell that it did start growing in December at one point. Could this growth in December have led to winterkill for these? Maybe they're just slow?

Winterkill is not a problem with garlic, elephant included. I think it has more to do with the quality of the seed garlic and to some extend, the climate.

I planted them in late December. They came up slow, now just 3" tall. Do not know what to expect. My regular garlic has put out 5-6 leaves, both soft and hardneck.
