Discovery Setting Leaves

last modified: 10 years ago

When first I started setting leaves, I would toss a Mother Leaf if it were browning or showed any wilt or rot.

Lately I have been too busy to go through the collection and I left some leaves that were completely rotted away.

Then those rotted mother leaves started sprouting Mouse Ears.

I learned not to be so quick to toss a Mother Leaf. Even a rotted, wilted Mother leaf can sprout MouseEars

Here is a picture of the Rotted Mother Leaf and the Mouse Ears. You can see how rotted the mother leaf is.

lucky, the foliage on your noid is every bit as nice as the bloom, which is a lovely bonus. I am a sucker for the red undersided leaves ...

That AV provides a perfect reason to grow NOID's. There are many quite worthwhile.

    Leon -

they are ALL named. There is no such thing as a wonderful NOID. It is a beautiful named plant somebody put years and years of life to hybridize, select, go through 3 generations of checking how stable it is, naming it with something that is significant for him. There is no reason to throw away labels and call them NOIDs. But sometimes it happens.

There can be a legit reason to stick to NOID - like it is your grandmother plant - who cares what is the original name was - but now it is Granny's Pink - and it makes you feel warm and fuzzy.

Some people grow 3-4 plants in pink, red and blue on their windowsill - and they are happy. But you have ambitions. You want to know more, you crave to try different things, you will eventually want to build your own interesting collection. So - thinking about future...do not fill your shelves with NoIDs.

Ha some people have all the luck. In my situation weather it's named or not, I grab on to it because I don't have the choice of refusing, getting African violets here is like really difficult so one is overjoyed when your lucky enough to find one at our flower shows.:) velleta

Velleta - in my book - you are a hero - I do not care what kind of AVs you grow - but you just hit a world record on successfuly growing violets where nobody else can.

Lucky - let's agree to disagree. The fact that you do not know if your blue and white is Optimara Maine - or something else - doesn't make it less beautiful. Same is about the second one- the leaves look like it came from Lyndon Lyon - they often have longish petioles - but we will never know. Well grown plant. I love these photos. Your pink with raspberry edge - I remember - you just got it from a store - and chopped the spent flowers off. I am waiting to see when it spends some time in your house and you make another pic of it.

I do not go to Conventions that often - last time it was Austin. I buy stuff from ebay, pick leaves from AV friends. I like oldies, unusual ones.

Irina awww you make me blush. I suppose when you love something enough theirs this drive in you that propels you forward.

And Avs does just that with me and guess what? No complains here. I have officially passed my one year alive mark and I am as happy as a clown. Thanks to everyone here.

I have met a few new friends who use to grow them at flower shows here and now I am on a mission to see if I can get more persons back in love with Avs, reason? If we have more people growing them then we will have more vendors importing them so they will be more easily available.

In my book that's a win win case. Velleta
