Brown thumb :(

last modified: 10 years ago

I am pretty new to gardening. We bought two blue hibiscus trees (h. Syriacus) for our east facing front yard. One is seemingly doing well, but the second one is struggling. From the start it has basically shriveled- all blooms have withered but not dropped. The leaves have shriveled and are starting to brown and crisp. The soil is staying damp, so I am not sure if it's being over watered or under. We watered and fertilized both when transplanting them from pot to ground 2 weeks ago and watered as instructed by the local nursery. Any thoughts on how to bring it back? Located in Southern California, a little north of San Diego. Climate zone 20 but don't know hardiness zone rating.
