Did the change in your tomato plants occur after an exceptionally windy day? Did it occur when they had been outside? To me, your description of leaves loosing color and edges turning gray sounds more like environmental stress than a pest issue. The kind of environmental stress could be that they got too much sun (the loss of color on leaves is the clue), got too dry (moisture loss can cause light speckling) or got too much wind. The gray edges on the leaves and the dryness also sound like symptoms of windburn. That's my best guess.

This showed up on some of my plants, after they'd spent the day outside on a windy day ....... I hope that's all it is, note the center of end leaf ...

put mine in green house and they are recovering. they are out of the wind and cool and it is in the 90s during the day. Thanks Dawn that seem to be the problem. I have the same problem in the garden off and on for yrs. thought it was spider mites. never too old to learn

lcdollar, It does look like environmental stress. Pamper it for a few days by keeping it out of extreme wind and bright sunlight and it will bounce back. The discolored spots won't go away, but as new foliage comes out, it will hide them and you can pinch off the damaged leaves later if you choose, once the plant has enough leaves to live on without them.

oldokie, You're welcome. Spider mite damage in summer can look very similar, but it has that distinct stippled pattern.

If you have spider mites now while it is still cool, then heaven help you and your plants. : )

I don't mean in the greenhouse----because of its warmth, there could be spider mites in the greenhouse, but they shouldn't be active outdoors yet.

Environmental damage is most common in February through May when tender foliage of young plants is exposed to drying wind, strong sunlight to which it is not yet adapted, or a combination of the two. Spider mite damage is most common in the really hot summer weather.
