Need help on leaves diagnosis

Recently, some of the African violet leaves at the outer ring are turning light green and then yellow. It's not only 1 or 2 leaves but about 3 to 9 leaves all at the same time. Other than that, the inner leaves are still green. The plants look ok and is blooming. Does anybody know what is wrong?

thanks

elsa

Sounds like aging leaves which is completely normal, but without a photo I can't be sure - or at least without more information. How long have you had this plant and how large is it? Have you ever removed any of the outer leaves as it has grown? If you've had it a long time and it is a good sized plant with all its original leaves, you just need to "groom" it by taking off the yellow leaves and probably re-potting it lower in its pot to cover the exposed neck. Leaves on AV's have a life span and the outer row should occasionally be removed cleanly (meaning leaving no stumps behind on the main stem.) This keeps it looking its best and actually stimulates new growth and blooming.

If this doesn't sound like it applies to what's going on with your plant, please tell us more or try to post a photo if possible.

It also happens if the plants do not get enough fertilizer - specifically nitrogen. Sometimes - because the grower thinks that the soil is preloaded with fertilizer so it will last forever - but actually it will be exhausted in 2-3 months. Sometimes - the plant was not repotted for a year or more, the soil got sour - and the plant cannot absorb nutrients because of this acidity. The plant sends its resources towards young center leaves and blossoms - and the older tired leaves get sacrificed.

So - Elsa - you need to answer these questions -

    1. How old are the leaves you are losing? If a year or more - it is time. Just as AnneCecilia described.

    2. Do you fertilize your plant? How long ago you repotted it? If these things are behind - adress them.

No matter what is the cause these leaves are not going to get green again. You can remove the worst ones now, and the next row - some time later.

    Hello all,

Thank you all of you with these quick responses. I re-potted both plants in Nov 2015. I believe i removed 1 or 2 yellow leaves in the past but not numerous leaves at the same time. I give fertilizer sometimes when I water but not every times because they got orange stain on the leaves last year. I think I put too much fertilizer. I used Miracle Gro African Violet Plant food. I have another plant grow in office under fluorescent light. It is the same age and size but don't have such problem. Will it because the sun make them aged faster? :D

the picture below is ian minute purchased in last summer online. It has about 5 light green/yellowish leaves. The plant is about 8 inch.

the picture below is Azure Sky purchased online in 2014. The whole outer row is light green/yellowish now. The size of plant is about 9 inch.

    this is the same plant.

    Thanks

    Elsa -

I do not think there is a cause to worry. Very healthy plants. I am still thinking it is a low nitrogen issue. You can remove the yellow leaves- they are not going to green up. They have a directions for a fertilizer on a bottle - cut the amount in half - and you can use it every time you water. You can leach your pots every so often - just run tepid water through the soil until the runoff is clear. It will prevent orange crystals. But you need to fertilize. Your plants will be blooming for you.

Not Ian Minute, but Ian-Minuet - minuet is a slow dance from 18 century. So the pink double flower with raspberry edge reminded the hybridizer the dancing ladies with hoop skirts...
